Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello. Yep, we’re still discussing them — because Shawn recently opened up about his ex-relationship, and we gotta talk about it.
Let’s recap. I’m sure you know Shawn and Camila have had a sort of on-again, off-again relationship. They got together in 2019 after being friends for several years (and, you know, performing some iconic duets together).
Their relationship was pretty public. Like, you probably remember how much PDA there was of the two of them. And they lived together, too, so it was definitely serious.
And although sources denied they were back together after the Coachella PDA, Shawn and Camila officially got back together later that same month. But they broke up again in June 2023, two months after they got back together.
So why are people talking about Shawn and Camila now, in late 2024? It might have something to do with Sabrina releasing songs people think are about the situation on her new album, Short ‘n Sweet. Or the fact that all 3 of them performed songs speculated to be about each other at the VMAs last month. Yikes.
Through all of this, Camila and Shawn have only praised one another, although it may appear messy to the public. So all of us nosy, chronically online folk will be happy to learn that we just got more insight from Shawn himself about where their relationship stands.
On Sept. 30, Shawn went on the Jay Shetty Podcast to discuss topics like fame, mental health, and of course, music. But he also talked about his split from Camila, and the public’s reaction.
Jay Shetty, the podcast host, asked Shawn what it’s like for his romantic life — and subsequently his breakups — to be so publicized. Shawn agreed that this experience is “brutal.”
Shawn said, “Honestly, I think Camila and I have just done the best job at preserving our private little fire of love for each other. Because no matter how strong mentally you are, when there are millions of people commenting on it, it’s so hard not to be affected by it, and to be swayed by it, and to be inspired by it, and to desire it.”
“This is not a movie,” Shawn explained. “This is real life. This is real love, and love is confusing and hard and goes through dips, goes through pauses, goes through breaks.”
Jay followed up by asking Shawn what methods he uses to protect his relationships (other than limiting social media). Shawn responded with, “Overcommunication.”
Whenever they each discuss the situation publicly, Shawn and Camila check in with one another to “cut through any assumption” either of them could make. “I’ll be the first to text her; she’ll be the first to text me,” he said. “As long as we’re good, all the noise is just noise.”
And of course, like the classy, kind Canadian he is, Shawn ended off his response with, “I’m just lucky [Camila is] an amazing human being.” So it looks like things are cool between the two stars, and they’re being super mature about their relationship.
And I don’t know about you, but I have a new level of respect for both Shawn and Camila given how they’re dealing with the heat they’ve both been getting. Communication! Maturity! We love to see it!
